Graduate Student Call for Papers

2nd Annual ucLADINO Symposium: March 5-6, 2013

University of California, Los Angeles
Co-sponsored by the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the Center for Jewish Studies

Judeo-Spanish has evolved for more than ?ve centuries since the expulsion of the Jews of the Iberian Peninsula. This symposium looks to engage in dialogue to explore the multifaceted aspects of Diaspora through variable changes from the time of the Sephardic expulsion through the 21st century.

Topics of exploration may include, but are not limited to:

• Comparative studies on Judeo-Spanish vernaculars (Judezmo vs. Haketia)
• Anthropological studies of Sephardic communities
• Research on migration of Sephardim in/to Latin America
• Historical studies of the Sephardim in the Ottoman Empire or North Africa
• Ethnomusicological Judeo-Spanish research
• Literary representation of the Sephardic diaspora
• Language revival and national identity in contemporary JudeoSpanish/Sephardic society
• Holocaust studies related to the Sephardim or Judeo-Spanish
• Contemporary Judeo-Spanish pedagogy
• The blending of non-Judeo-Spanish into Judeo-Spanish discourse/language/literature/etc.
• Synchronic/Diachronic research on Judeo-Spanish
